Stuttering
—
We specialize in stuttering, and the first thing we like to emphasize is that it's okay to stutter. Our goal is to help individuals begin the process of accepting their stuttering… focus on helping the person communicate effectively WITH their stutter… affirm individuals’ identities as a person who stutters and learn communication strategies to be a more confident communicator. Tenets of ARTS therapy (Avoidance Reduction therapy for Stuttering), mindfulness, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), SFBT (Solution Focused Brief Therapy), fluency shaping and stuttering modification will be used.
Speech Sound Disorders
—
There are two main types of speech sound disorders, articulation disorder and phonological disorder. An articulation disorder includes any substitution, addition, omission, or distortion when producing specific speech sounds. We first focus on shaping the sounds in isolation and then work on moving up the hierarchy to syllables, single words, and ultimately all the way up to generalizing this new sound within conversational speech. A phonological disorder includes predictable errors or patterns of errors that often impact more than one sound. For example, a substitution of “t” for “k” (“tall” for call and “dut” for duck). Phonological disorders can be linked to issues with language, so children with phonological disorders can be at risk for issues when developing literacy skills.
